Making a Carpet in the Tent: A Tale of Determination
In the harsh reality of our refugee camp , Living in a tent for over 400 days has pushed us to find creative ways to adapt and survive. Among the many challenges we face, creating a safe and clean space for our daughter, Sella, has been a constant priority. One of our biggest tasks was making a simple carpet to protect her and ourselves from the dangers of living on bare ground.
Why We Made the Carpet
The ground was full of dust and worms, increasing the risk of skin diseases and infections. Rain or spilled water would make the floor dangerously slippery, leading to frequent injuries. Worse still, food contamination and stomach illnesses were constant threats, as we struggled to maintain basic hygiene.
The Process
Each stitch carried the weight of our struggles and hopes.
- We carefully cut the flour bags to maximize the coverage.
- Flattening the uneven ground beneath the tent, we combed the earth to make it smoother.
- Then, stitch by stitch, with tired hands but determined hearts, we sewed the bags together.
- Once completed, we spread the handmade carpet across the floor, ensuring it covered every corner of our little home “ tent”.
This small creation was not just a carpet—it was our way of reclaiming a bit of dignity and protecting our daughter from harm.
Our Emotions
The process of making this carpet was bittersweet. It reminded us of the home we once had—beautiful, clean, and filled with joy. Now, we find ourselves in a place where every small improvement feels like a monumental achievement.
It hurts deeply to see our daughter, Sella, trying to take her first confident steps on gravel and uneven ground, only to fall and hurt herself. We flattened the ground to give her a safer space to walk and explore. But the pain of not being able to raise her in a safe and nurturing environment weighs heavily on us.
Still, we strive to make this place feel more like a home, even if it’s just by creating a small carpet. We want Sella to see beauty in her surroundings, despite the harsh reality.
What would you do if you were in our situation? How would you protect your children from dust, injuries, and worms while living in a tent? We would love to hear your thoughts and ideas via message.
